How Did Sunday Breakfast Mission
Come About?
In 1893, the group called the Christian Endeavor Society of
Wilmington decided that they would attempt to reach out to the
homeless men and “tramps” of Delaware. They wanted
to bring them to church on Sundays. Hearing about a similar
effort in nearby Philadelphia, they went there to study it.
They soon established an effort to provide:
- A meeting each Sabbath morning for the homeless men and
tramps
- A free meal for these men
- Effort to find work for these
men.
Their ministry opened at 7th and Lombard in late 1893. But soon,
in January 1894, they began to provide shelter.
Through the years and several locations, the Mission has gone
way beyond “Sunday Breakfast” to reach out to children
through Sunday schools and women through “Mother’s
Clubs.” They also continued to expand their ministry to
men. All of this effort carries the same Christian emphasis and
content of that early Christian Endeavor Society: To provide rest
for the body and peace for the soul.
